Verifications
The documented history of an object is now almost as important as the object itself. We will check whether the information about your object can be found in our archive.
Evidence, not claims
How come?
In the African art trade, there's hardly anything that's talked about as much as the provenance of an object. Documents and certificates are forged, labels are relabeled, collections are invented, and famous names are invoked without any evidence.
In the art market, one hears many impressive provenances, and some of them are even true. It's frustrating that so much is claimed today and so little is substantiated. This harms collectors, heirs, and ultimately the entire market. Because a provenance is only as valuable as its supporting documentation.
What exactly?
Around one hundred thousand objects have passed through our hands over the decades. We preserve business records, original documents, and photographs from the time they were traded. We confirm in writing what can be substantiated in these documents. We state just as openly what cannot.
